Inking John K's Sody Pop & Raketeena

After some encouragement from John K I stayed in last night and took a shot at inking the other Sody & Raketeena frames. They're not perfect, but I think they capture the energy of John's drawings as well as do a good job of describing form. It's pretty challenging and a little scary to clean up someone else's work, especially when they're a much better draftsman and cartoonist than you. John pointed some areas that need to be fixed which I'll address before I color them.

Those are sweet.

Hey, what's the chance you'd be willing to do a quick inking and coloring in illustrator tutorial? Whenever I try inking in Illustrator it always proves to be a huge pain in the ass, and the available tutorials on the subject are REALLY weak. Any advice?

A tutorial would be a great idea! I'll put one together this week and post it.

The key is having a Wacom Tablet. I used to use the Pen Tool to create the lines and it took forever and looked stiff. The Brush Tool is much better and feels more like using a brush. The advantage is you get more than one attempt at aeach line! There is also a way to smooth the lines after they're drawn if you have a shaky hand moment.

These look great . Excellent roughs from John K (as usual) , but you really captured it in your clean ups.

I , too, would be grateful for an Illustrator tutorial showing how you use Illustrator for inking. I have a Wacom, but I usually use Photoshop or TVPaint for clean up/inking ... have barely touched Illustrator, but I know it's something I need to learn.

Burn the pen tool! I used to do the same thing too. Lots of wasted days... Excellent job!
